Description

Dimensions (H/W) 54 x 46 cm

54×46 cm. Printed diploma from Virginia Medical College for Job T. Dickins, with names of the graduate, the date, the the signatures of the issuing professors written in. It appears to be printed on light vellum, though it could be heavy paper. Previously folded with two small insect holes along the center vertical fold. Seal of the institution is printed at the lower left. The location of the school as printed on the diploma is Petersburg, though we can find no indications that this institution was ever located there. This college was originally founded as the medical department of Hampton-Sydney College. According to its history on the web site of Virginia Commonwealth University into which it merged in 1968, it became the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. However, this 1847 diploma clearly uses that name, not that of Hampden-Sydney College. We are also in possession of an 1849 diploma for this same individual, Job T. Dickins, from the Worcester Medical College. Engraved by W. D. Emery of Worcester, Mass.
