Disbound and removed from a larger volume. Minor water stain near spine. 125 pp. An early work on American canals, but also at p.108 is a reference to Virginia soon introducing railroads. This mention of railroads makes it among the earliest such references in a work published in the United States. Based on listings of other works in Thomson (Checklist of Publications on American Railroads before 1841), this would be among the first ten American printed references to railroads. These are the proposals for Pennsylvania’s great internal improvements program by its primary promoter. The proposed roads and canals are described in great detail. William Duane later became Andrew Jackson’s Secretary of the Treasury. Printed by Jane Aitken, an early American female printer. She was the daughter of Robert Aitken who had published the Journals of Congress and the first English-language Bible printed in the United States. Not in Thomson. OCLC 8015427, S&S 22727.
