Original stamped black cloth, worn at ends of spine, otherwise very good to excellent [4], 416, [2] pp., engraved title page, frontispiece portrait, 4 full-page illustrations. First biographical study of the American Arctic explorer and US Navy surgeon (1820-57). Notable for the commentary by Louis Agassiz, William Cullen Bryant, Washington Irving, et al., in the publisher’s advertisements. “Announced as forthcoming in May last [i.e. 1857]” but delayed due to the author’s lack of material for completion (see “To the Reader”, pp. 3-4).
