This is a sample book for a 2-volume set designed to be a popular history of the American military on the eve of the Civil War. Full cloth, with the front cover having the word “Specimen” gilt. The back cover has blind tooling for the publisher, Johnson, Fry & Co. Very good condition, light wear at extremities, top of spine torn. 16 pp., 8 uncolored engraved plates, decorative title page. This was a proof for publicizing this set of books, though unlike later salesman’s sample books it does not have pages for the listing of subscribers.
